For men trying to have children, it is likely best to ensure that you are taking the recommended daily folate in your diet. A recent study from McGill University in Canada shows that in mice (this is the first time this is shown in any animal or human), decreased folate diet in males leads to altered sperm DNA methylation (a special marking on the genetic code of the sperm that is thought to be important) and worse pregnancy rates. While this study needs verification in humans, it has been known for years that folate is critical for women who are or will become pregnant. So this only makes sense that it would be important for men. Folate, also known as vitamin B9, is found in lentils, spinach, asparagus, and lettuce, avocado, broccoli, mango, oranges and wheat bread.
